A New Sound in the Valley🎤
There’s something about those Montana rains; they’re always bringing something special with them. When I first arrived at the 2nd annual “A Legendary Showcase” featuring Nicky Greed, Cavari and John Lindsey hosted by Steve and Nikki Guggenheimer, I dried off and found my place in the room, and when the showcase began my first impressions of listening to the showcase’s music was much more than just heard, it’s felt within the soul. A new sound to me.
Nicky Greed
Like an artist paints, a musician paints too, with his own unique sound and technique. From a young age, Nicky took to music. It surrounded him all the time. He grew up in a religious household where his mother and brother loved music. At a mere age of nine Nicky became fascinated with music. “I really started singing seriously in my teens because I became obsessed with Brandon Boyd, the lead singer of Incubus,” shares Nicky.
“Holding full out rock sessions, they put up with a lot from us. My friends would get together and have jam sessions with the band Silver Solin. My mom put up with our noise. My mother worked many roles. She worked primarily Eastern Airlines +20 years and held many positions within the airline, travel industry and management. Residing in Wellington, west of Royal Palm Beach, Florida Nicky attended junior high. He was then homeschooled through high school and taught himself music. “I taught myself how to sing and really hear notes. I can mimic any sound.” Nicky’s favorite is to sing, music production and artistic management.
Traveling to Montana, Nicky gets excited to explain his love for the valley. “You can feel the joy and utmost appreciation for Montana. Out here is a hidden gem; the people are wonderful.”
While in Montana, Nicky has dabbled a little into country music with roots in Missoula. Nicky works and records with Matt Stivers from the Matt Stivers band. He also works with Alex Lipshaw, a long time friend and mentor in Nashville from the SnowTree Production studio. He does the mastering and remixing.
While I listen to Nicky sing Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” a mixture of old blues and country, my ears are in sweet candy heaven – as I hear a slight mixture of Al Green’s raspy tones and a unique harmonization of Nicky’s own voice. Amplifying the blues and putting his own touch on this cover makes me close my eyes and search for the feeling in the song.
Moondance, a dance sound comparable to the artist, BeyoncĂ© and her Break My Soul album. Filming “Moon Dance” on a yacht and private plane back in Florida, an upbeat, moving EDM dance track that makes you dance wherever you are. So light and fun, “Moon Dance” is currently on repeat in my car. And currently in construction is his new coming-soon release, “Distance.” “Distance” is quite the opposite of moon dance. It’s emotional, it’s storytelling, raw and bold.
Jumping back, After passing through Tulsa following the sudden passing of a very close family member, Nicky began a journey of process and healing. He met up with childhood friend Cavari, and they laid the track “Distance” down with no music, just raw emotion. The first time I heard this it literally took me out of my present body and projected my soul back in time to confront my trauma and release it. I had goosebumps and I was slowly in tears. Nothing in this world is more powerful than energy and vibration. The piece “Distance” to me is just that, light, healing and impactful.
After the showcase we followed friends into town to Rocky Wozny’s home to meet up with the artists and to sing along with them while jamming out. Rocky opens his home to Deer Lodge, members and staff. It was a fantastic evening with new music, new friends and new memories. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in setting up the event! We look forward to your next showcase!
